When looking for inspiration for a flyer or web page, you might have seen some really cool fonts online. Problem is, they’re embedded in an image, making them impossible both to identify and to copy. But there’s a way to identify fonts in images at no cost.

Step One

Once you have the image you want and have saved it to your computer, open your web browser and visit a site called What Font Is.

Step Two

Once at the site, upload the image you saved in step one, and be sure to select the right background color for the best possible chance of successful font identification.

Step Three

Once you click continue, simply follow the instructions by typing in each highlighted letter that you see. After clicking continue for the last time, your results will appear in the window. Once you’ve found the site that offers your desired font for download, you can bookmark it or install the font to save you tons of time in searching online when you need it next time.

The first 802.11ac wireless router and media bridge were announced to be available for purchase today by Texas-based company Buffalo. Its announcement makes it the first networking company to get its new router on the market, just ahead of Netgear who announced that it’s version of the next-generation router would be on shelves this month. The features of the new router are impressive; not only are both of Buffalo’s products – the router and wireless media bridge – compatible with older 802.11 devices, but they also feature the latest ac wireless standard which is so advanced that it’s ratification by the IEEE is still pending, and so not yet available for use on phones laptops or tablets. However, the good news is that devices with compatible chips will be available in the next year.

If you’re ready to buy a new computer, you may be automatically thinking either Mac or Windows PC. You may have been using a Windows PC or Mac for years, and so see no reason why you should switch to a different operating system now. But many changes have come to both types of computers over the years which could actually change your buying decisions. The first thing to do is take your own personal requirements into account.

Different Computers, Different Functions

The major difference between Mac and Windows PC remains the same: Windows computers are still best for office-based functions like spreadsheets and word processing, while Macs remain the leader if you need a computer for creating, editing or producing several different types of media.

Windows can now be installed onto Macs, much to the delight of gamers who, until now, haven’t been able to play computer video games on these systems.

The Look

If looks were your main concern, a Mac historically would win this argument hands-down with its sleeker and shinier design. But many of today’s PCs are following the pretty trend with the production of machines that are both highly functional as well as pleasing to the eye.

Official responsibility was claimed today by a group referring to itself as the Russian branch of Anonymous, who successfully took down both the Kremlin website and that of the Russian President. While the Kremlin website appears to be back online, the site of the Russian President is still returning a 502 Bad Gateway error as of the time of this posting. In addition to the two websites mentioned previously, the site of the Russian Federal Security Service has also been experiencing performance issues. However, it is not clear at this point if those issues are related to Anonymous activities. The collective used Twitter to announce their successful attacks, while the Kremlin press-service confirmed the attacks with a statement saying they had received threats from Anonymous previously, but cannot confirm it was the collective who was responsible for the attack.

More people every day are using the Google Chrome browser. But because its interface is largely free of clutter, many of the browser’s highly-useful features aren’t visible, and therefore go unnoticed by users. Below is some information about how to access these features.

Find

This feature allows you to search for words and phrases in a web page. While this may not seem very interesting at the outset, it can really be of help if you need to find what you’re looking for and the web page containing that information is very long. To use the Find tool, just access the tools menu and choose “Find”. A search box will appear that will allow you to move between words and phrases on a web page using your arrow keys.

Sync

Sync allows multiple computers having Chrome installed with Google accounts to communicate with each other. Users can sync pretty much anything, from apps to themes. Getting started begins with accessing the Tools menu in Chrome, and then choosing Preferences or Settings. Choosing Personal Stuff and then ‘Set Up Sync’ will get you started. Remember that this process will have to be followed for each computer you wish to sync.

The institutions have launched an initiative called edX which would see online courses being offered for free. Today’s launch involves the development of open-source software to make some of the institutions’ courses available to would-be students. The venture will be a not-for-profit funded by institutional support and grants totaling $60 million. The move will allow both institutions to learn more about online education so that their current offerings can be enhanced. For the long term, the institutions hope their software will be used by other universities, and are seeking to educate one billion people worldwide. Other future endeavors include software which will offer personalized coursework, collaboration tools and test learning for students.

Even if you’ve just recently placed your site online, you should know that there is the possibility that it could have already been taken over by hackers. Even the images in your site can be loaded with malicious software, designed to steal the information of anyone who visits your site. But you can check to ensure your site is safe to browse by taking advantage of a free tool.

Google Safe Browsing

This tool can be used with both Google Chrome and Firefox browsers. Simply navigate to http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=http://your site URL here.com/, and a report will be generated which includes the following information:

- The last time Google analyzed your page

- Your site’s current listing status

- When your site was last listed as malicious

- The type or types of malware Google encountered

Because it’s so easy to do, web site owners can visit at any time to ensure that their site is safe. Doing so will allow traffic to continue to flow to your site at its current rate, which can mean less downtime and more exposure for your place on the web.

Will the roads of the future offer wireless internet to travelers? That’s the goal of Spanish company Via Inteligente, who recently created paving stones that include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and a built-in computer. A possible solution for expanding wireless networks in urban areas, the iPavement stones are as durable as traditional concrete blocks. Instead of searching for hotspots or having to use an antenna to get online with a mobile device, iPavement would allow people to access a number of services using just their devices. In addition to its wireless capabilities, each block also contains various apps which can be used to access various services, including book downloads, traffic conditions and store coupons. The stones come in two versions; smooth and corrugated, are compatible with most popular browsers such as Google Chrome and Internet Explorer, and are offered in six languages.

Stores that sell computers have made it incredibly easy for anyone to walk in with some details, and walk out with everything they need to get set up in minutes. But if you’re interested in saving a little money on your next computer, you may wish to consider the following.

Computer Monitors And Peripherals

If your current monitor and other peripherals are working fine, there may be no need to spend the extra money to buy them brand new. If you absolutely must have the latest monitor and printer tech, consider getting a little bit of money back by selling your old stuff online at a site like Kijiji.

Reconsider The Rebate

If one of the reasons you’re getting a new computer is because of a great rebate offer you saw, you should know that sometimes, rebates are offered on computers which a company plans to discontinue, which means that the tech you end up getting could very soon be out of date. As well, some companies will try to pretty up the package by including a number of free extras. Much of the time, those extras can be of poor quality and aren’t something you will end up using.

The fastest-growing sector in the telecom industry – namely, the U.S. wireless market - may be nearing saturation. Shrinking wireless contract sales due largely to a sharp increase in iPhone sales late last year indicates that customer demand for wireless plans has been met. A total of twenty-thousand wireless customers unsubscribed from their services in the first quarter of this year. The decrease in wireless demand will impact the competitive intensity between carriers, as well as force them to supplement the loss by trying for customers of smaller wireless companies by tempting them with 2-year contracts. The pie that is the wireless market has stopped growing, according to experts, and what happens now will involve what they call ‘share-shifting’. As well, it’s expected that the forces of consolidation and price pressure will manifest themselves.

So you’ve realized just how important social media giant Twitter could be to your business or personal life. You’ve created a free account, and have followed a few people, but nothing’s happening. That’s probably because very few people are following you.

But tweeting to random accounts will do little for you except get your account suspended. So how do you break the ice with the Twitterverse and get yourself noticed?

Think About Your Goals

What is the end goal of having a Twitter account? Do you want to educate people? Inspire them in some way? Get them to purchase your products or services? Whatever it is, your tweets should reflect your goals. Make your business Twitter account about business. If you have a specific interest, seek out others with the same interests and ask them questions to get the ball rolling.

Tell Them Who You Are

Your bio is the only way people can identify you and decide whether or not to follow you. So why not use it to its full potential? Think about what a stranger might want to know about you, and then include that information.

Say Cheese

The numbers are true; add a photo, build trust and credibility. It’s been proven that those who include a photo on their Twitter account gain more followers than those who don’t. A personal account will be complemented nicely with a photo of you smiling. For business accounts, your logo, whether it be for your product, service or web site, will help keep you in the forefront of the minds of other tweeters.

That’s what Netflix CEO Reed Hastings thinks of Comcast. The issue appears to lie with the cable company’s claim that it must pay high costs to deliver internet video. Hastings explained on his Facebook page that subscribers wanting access to internet video sites like Netflix and Hulu through their gaming consoles will have that viewing count against Comcast’s monthly data limit. However, when the Xfinity service is used, subscribers don’t get dinged. This latest outcry against data limits and how it affects net neutrality is just one of many to occur over the last year, due to several telcos moving to tiered data services and increasing the costs for data. Many feel the FCC should step in in the war over data caps, but recent news indicated that the FCC has no jurisdiction where it comes to regulating internet companies.

Can a $5 app really provide you with cheap remote surveillance? The answer is yes, and setting it up is much easier than you think. Whether you want to communicate with visitors to your home while you’re on vacation, or simply want to keep an eye on the new addition to your family, remote surveillance can be a handy tool that only needs your computer’s web cam and a couple of small installations to work.

iCam

The iCam app, costing just $5, offers a host of features, including motion detection and audio streaming. The download is two-fold; you will have to install iCam Source onto your computer, and then get the iCam app for your iOS or Android device.

Useful Tips

You will need to create a username and password that you can remember, but that you’re sure no one else you know will be able to figure out. You will also need to ensure that the device which you are using for your surveillance camera is turned on at all times.

Access to your computer’s firewall is also required, so be sure to allow iCam that access if you are prompted to do so. To view your camera or cameras, simply log into iCam with the username and password you created when you installed iCam Source onto your computer.

A new monitor announced by Philips will offer users with constant reminders to straighten their posture, take stretch breaks and save energy. The ErgoSensor Monitor features a 24″, 1920 x 1080 LDC screen whose ‘eye’ is located in the top bezel of the monitor, usually the location of a standard web cam. A user’s position in front of the monitor, as well as their distance from it is measured. If anything appears to be amiss with posture, the monitor provides feedback. The eye can also detect when a sure is away from the screen, triggering it to shut the screen down for power conservation purposes. While no price has yet been announced, the monitor is sure to assist with a common result of incorrect positioning in front of computers: forward head posture, which involves the elimination of the neck’s natural curve and can result in significant neck pain.

If you’ve recently created a Facebook page for your business, figuring out how you’re going to use it to communicate with your customers and fans is your next step. What on earth do you talk about that will keep those who like your page coming back time and again? Considering these tips may help to give you some ideas.

Avoid Excessive Horn Blowing

Constantly self-promoting your business will only cause you to lose followers. Remember the point behind social networking, which is to create loyalty, friendship and community. If you wouldn’t jump on a customer with all of your promotions when they walk through your physical door, then why do it on Facebook?

Use The Present Tense

If you’re posting when you have a few free minutes, such as in the morning or when your work is done at night, then your Facebook fans are missing out on the most exciting moments of your business’s day. Instead of always telling them about what happened already, or what is going to happen, try giving them updates throughout the day as events occur. This will make them feel like they are important enough to keep in the loop.

Share Other Content

Your Facebook page can’t just be all about you. So why not educate and inform your fans by posting content from around the web that have to do with your business? It could be a funny video you saw, stories, or customer comments.

A start-up company in Belgium is testing a new payment system that would use Facebook and Twitter. The system, called Paycento, would allow for small payments to be made for items such as single articles on newspaper web sites or songs with a single click. The idea was founded on the knowledge that most surfers are logged into social media sites as they surf, and that an easy-to-use online payment system was needed. Users can link Paycento to their LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter accounts and then make their small online purchases in the same amount of time it would take to post a comment or article on their social media accounts. And newspaper publishers would certainly benefit, as they would be able to make money from their posted articles without requiring users to pay for a full subscription.

Like most machines, printers can often fail when we need them the most. Sudden drops in print quality, paper jams and the like are just a few of the common issues people have with this often-crucial peripheral.

Paper Jams And Your Magic Manual

Believe it or not, the way you clear a paper jam in your printer is very important. Yanking the paper quickly out of frustration can actually cause damage to the internal workings of your printer. Before you clear that paper jam, consult your printer’s manual for any specific information, such as how to reach jammed paper and how jammed sheets should be removed in one piece.

Poor Print Quality

If you recently got a bunch of printer paper on sale, but are now experiencing inferior print quality, chances are it’s the paper weight you are using. Different paper weight can cause your printer’s rollers to adjust differently when pulling paper through, and can also affect how certain types of printers distribute the ink.

You may have needed different settings the last time you printed something. For example, if the last thing you printed was a document, you may have set the printer to use its ‘economy’ setting, which will put much less ink on the page.

Although some employers are openly requesting the Facebook login details of some of their employment applicants, this troubling trend is not likely to affect Canadian interviewees, say experts in a release published today. The reason Canadian job applicants don’t have to worry is due to Canadian labor laws, which currently offer applicants strong protection from employers seeking sensitive information. And the laws are two-fold, with privacy commissioners enforcing both federal and provincial regulations. While there is no law that is specific to social media in Canada, the legislation is clear about the rights employers have to the personal information of applicants. As well, those in Canada seem unwilling to adopt the same strategies as their counterparts in the United States. But experts are urging Canadians that this is no reason not to be careful with the type of information users post on social media sites.

Technology is progressing at a faster rate than ever, which can mean that your ‘old’ technology is really piling up. If you have a growing collection of old technology or unused computer parts hanging around your home, you’re probably getting ready for a trip to your nearest electronics recycling depot. But is there something else you could be doing with your unwanted items to save yourself some money and create new future technologies? According to LifeHacker, you can. An old webcam can be turned into a home security camera with just your PC a webcam and free software. If you want to charge your devices ‘off the grid’, you can repurpose an old PC fan by turning it into a wind turbine. The site offers ten suggestions like this, which range from simple to involved.

Renaming your music files isn’t difficult, but it can be incredibly time-consuming if you have a lot of music. And if you own an iPod, then you know that copying your music is no easy task; there are ways around this issue that can be implemented manually, but lost formatting between the device and your computer can more often than not be the result. So why not use a handy app to manage your music?

Sharepod

Sharepod is a free app which allows you to rename, copy, transfer and manage all of your music. Once downloaded, the app can make it easier than ever to keep your .mp3 folders neat. Before using the app, however, it’s recommended that iTunes be closed if it’s open.

Managing Your Music

Once inside Sharepod, all you have to do is select the tracks you want to copy from the list that appears in the first window that opens. After your desired music has been selected, look to the top left of the window and choose “Copy to PC”. Choose a destination folder, and click OK.

In copying your files with this tool, the result will be music transferred with no alterations to file names, and the same playability on your PC that you enjoyed on your iPod.

In addition to Apple stores in the U.S., the new iPad will be available at other participating stores including Sam’s Club, Wal-Mart, Target and Radio Shack. Customers who purchase the new iPad at Apple retail outlets will be able to take advantage of their free set up and customization service. Last week, an Apple representative stated that the new iPads would be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, which makes it quite likely that eager customers are already lining up. March 23rd will see the new iPad coming to more countries globally, including Greece, Norway, Poland, Ireland and Italy.

If you had a band back in the day, or a special tape that contains important recollections by a senior member of your family, then you may be wondering how to transfer that information to your computer.

Cassette tapes were all the rage thirty years ago, but the way in which they’re constructed can mean degradation of the information recorded onto the tape over time and with exposure to light and other elements. There are a few ways to transfer precious cassette tape recordings to your computer or to a CD.
Find A Free Recording Program
If your sound card does not have recording software already installed, you will need to find a program to do this. Many of these can be found for free with a free search. Audacity is one example of a free program which has the features you will need to transfer cassette recordings to your computer.

Dust Off That Old Cassette Player
Believe it or not, you can connect a cassette player to your computer. All you need is a cable that will plug into the back of the cassette player through its RCA output, and into the back of your computer’s sound card with a small stereo plug. If you have to plug the cable into your computer’s head phone or microphone jack, ensure that the sound is turned down all the way to avoid overloading your sound card.

Adjust The Input Volume
The input volume can be adjusted by going to your Control Panel, and then to Sound, Sounds and Audio Devices or Sounds and Multimedia, depending on the operating system you’re using. Click the Recording tab, select the Line In device, and then choose Properties to set your recording volume.

The Anonymous hacker collective released a statement on Wednesday of this week after having taken several Vatican sites offline, including its newspaper site. Along with its claim of responsibility, the group stated that it attacked the Vatican sites to respond to concepts the church spreads around the world, which, according to the group are absurd and anachronistic. In addition, the group stated that it was specifically targeting the Roman Apostolic Church, which it believes to be corrupt, and not the Christian religion or its faithful followers. It also accused the Catholic Church of several historical wrongdoings, including killing. This latest attack follows a string of charges to Anonymous members in the United States, Britain and Ireland on Tuesday after one member of the group made the decision to become an informant for the FBI.

You may not think that you need to be wary of your security while using your cell phone. But what if your phone gets stolen, or you find you’re a victim of harassment via text messages or voice mails?

Important Information In Case Of Theft
As soon as you purchase your phone, locate its hardware information. This can be done by either looking under the phone’s battery. You can also get this information by installing the software that most likely came with the purchase of your phone. Once you connect your phone to your computer, the software will be initiated, and you can record your phone’s information for storage in a safe place in case of theft.

Reporting Harrassment
The best place to look for advice on how to report harassment via your cell phone is to visit your carrier’s web site for the appropriate steps to take. You may discover that your carrier has measures in place, such as phone number monitoring, to track abusive calls and messages. But even if they do, it’s a good idea to keep records of these messages yourself. Voice mails and messages can be saved onto your computer by connecting your phone to it, finding the device in Windows Explorer, and then dragging and dropping individual files into a folder you’ve specified.

If you live in an area with no land line internet service, and you’ve found that satellite may not offer the right speed or price for you, you may have found a solution in the form of mobile hotspots. These devices, also called MiFi and aircards, can provide a faster internet connection than dial-up. But depending on the density of cell towers and their signals, the reception could be intermittent, leaving you with a costly aircard that simply doesn’t do the job. While you may be thinking about returning your hotspot, there are some troubleshooting tips that may offer a solution.

The Signal Booster

These devices work in conjunction with an aircard to intensify your internet signal. They do cost a moderate amount of up-front – up to $400 – but they can improve all kinds of cellular signals. Boosters are essentially antennas that are mounted on the outside of the home and then connected indoors to a receiver.

The Repurposed Booster

Another solution could be to use a booster in a different way. For example, you could purchase a booster made specifically to boost the cell phone signal in a vehicle for home use. These types of boosters can work well with MiFi systems, and can come in at a lot less than boosters designed for home use. However, you will need to be aware that most only work over 3G connections.

Iconosys, a company which develops apps with the goal of increasing personal safety and privacy, is enjoying great success with its recent release of Word Bully, a smartphone app which tells parents if there’s a chance that either their child is being bullied or is perpetrating such behaviour. The app allows parents to create a password for their child’s smartphone, and then enter their own mobile number. Once this has been completed, an SMS message can be sent to the parents phone whenever their child’s phone sends or receives any messages containing questionable terms as defined by the parent. In addition, parents can also opt for features which track their child’s location and allow them to supervise all texts sent and received with their child’s phone.

If you’ve ever lost important data that you thought was safely stored on your computer, then you know the kind of panic that accompanies it. This can happen just as easily with music files, whether you accidentally deleted them from your portable player or your computer. But just because your favourite tunes appear to have disappeared, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re gone forever.

But there are a few things to consider when you’re searching for ways to recover your files:

- The chances of recovery are quite good if your storage device isn’t damaged;

- How effective recovery attempts will be will depend on how many times you’ve written new information to your device since you noticed your missing files.

Unfortunately, any time you add new music to your device could result in the overwriting of the files that were previously on it. But if you haven’t yet stored any new music on your device since you noticed missing files, then don’t do so until you’ve taken steps to recover your data.

Computer Search

If you’re like many music lovers, you have a copy of your music stored on your computer. So before you panic, check your computer’s Recycle Bin to see if your missing files are there. If they are, simply right click on the desired items and choose “Restore”.

Windows Media Player

You can also use Windows Media Player to conduct a search for all of the music files that are currently on your computer. When you’ve opened the program, simply ensure that you’ve clicked the “Library” tab. This will get you a list of all of the songs on your computer. If you see your files there, right click on each and choose “Open file location”. Then, simply retrieve your files.
