October 26th marked the launch of ViaSat-1, a satellite that was expected to be able to support download speeds of up to 25 megabits per second and provide faster and more reliable service in areas across North America. The satellite reached geosynchronous orbit on November 3rd, and has already passed several pre-orbit tests with flying colours. Now in its in-orbit testing phase, it is scheduled to begin providing satellite internet service in limited areas in December, with service gradually expanding over the next three months across the United States. New expectations for the download speeds are now 10 to 15 megabits per second, still well above the current download speeds satellite customers experience. In addition to providing residential areas with satellite service, ViaSat-1 will also power JetBlue Airways in-flight internet for its domestic fleet.

Would you like to know where to find internet service providers in my area? Just use a comparison website that compares the ISPs that cover your location. Type in your city or even zip code and in a second or two, you’ll receive a list of ISPs and their current plans. You’ll also see at a glance what kind of broadband connection is available in your neighborhood – you may be able to choose from DSL, cable, fiber optics or mobile wireless. Remember to factor the monthly fee into your budget, and choose your speed and download limit wisely. If your speed isn’t fast enough and you want to watch streaming movies, then you may feel frustrated. And if your download limit isn’t large enough, you may be charged an extra fee if you exceed it during the month.

Verizon internet service will be taking the residential connection to a new level, possibly as soon as the fourth quarter. The company says that its new national rollout of a fixed broadband LTE voice and data package will be powered by a ‘cantenna’, a round antenna that looks like a can, already deployed with DirecTV. The company expects that this method of delivering home broadband will challenge the offerings of other major internet providers, as this would present a viable solution to those living in rural areas. The service would allow customers to get online via the fixed antenna with a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, and would be an alternative to cable and DSL. The antenna is said to be far more efficient than connections needing a MiFi card or dongle.

You read it right; your TV could soon be wireless if you are an AT&T internet service customer. That’s because the company’s U-Verse branch recently announced that it will be going wireless. The announcement comes as part of an effort to trim its time and cost to install the U-Verse service. New set-top boxes will take advantage of existing Wi-Fi connections in the home to obtain television programming; all that will be needed is to plug in your set and connect the box. Using internet technology to deliver TV programming will make it much easier for the company to transmit the signal wirelessly. Up to two of the set top boxes can be supported by a home’s hotspot. The boxes will be available beginning Monday, October 31 for a $49 one-time fee and $7 monthly rental fee thereafter.

When you’re looking for high speed internet
for your business, your first considerations may be DSL or cable, simply because they are the two most common types of internet service available. But they do have their limitations. First of all, they’re designed more for residential customers, with bandwidth not being guaranteed and limited upload speeds. As well, peak usage times can cause long slowdowns in a residential connection. If you are running a business that requires optimal access to the internet at any time of day, you might want to consider a T1 line. This direct connection from an ISP to your business, and can reach upload and download speeds of up to 1.5 Mbps with no upload limit or shared bandwidth. This eliminates the crowding and slowdowns that can occur with connections at the neighbourhood level.

Can Twitter be used to get in touch with the customer service department of a company? Absolutely. It’s the most current of Comcast specials, and a practice that’s becoming the norm for a growing number of companies who want to make customer service more accessible to users. The free instant messaging service is proving more convenient than Facebook for both customers and companies, as it provides instant broadcast of and reply to the short messages it allows. Comcast has been using the tool as a part of its customer service strategy since 2008, with a team of ten representatives who watch for and respond to updates currently. Among the other companies using the tool to communicate with customers are General Motors, McDonald’s, Southwest Airlines and Dell.

When we moved to our home seven years ago, I only had one choice when it came to an internet service provider. I stayed with that company until five months ago when I finally became fed up with how the connection speed would slow down each evening. Not only that, I frequently would be in the middle of a project, and Bang! I was kicked off the internet! I did a search and found a website that allowed me to look at all of the internet providers in my area in a side-by-side comparison. I even had many of my questions answered about the benefit of one features over another. I made a switch in my service provider and I am now back up and running without a single glitch over the past five months!

Despite an urging by an NHS Confederation Report in 2010, the rest of the world is far ahead of the UK where it comes to telemedicine. While face-to-face contact remains a crucial aspect of health services there, most people will be accessing numerous healthcare services via the internet with virtual consultations and independent research of medical conditions. The reason the UK remains behind is largely due to the ignoring of telemedicine’s potential, even when a patient is proactive about connecting with a physician on a remote basis. Telemedicine can not only expedite lab results, but can also drastically reduce or eliminate the cost and time for some to travel to faraway medical centers for treatment. A live video and audio connection can allow patients and clinicians to communicate and view various scans and test results.

We’ve all heard the term ‘cloud computing’. This trend makes it much more convenient for us to organize and store all of our information. Moving away from traditional storage on your hard drive, cloud computing allows for secure storage online. And it could mean billions of dollars for the wireless internet service companies, because consumers are expected to be spending 5 times more on cloud computing services over the next five years. The reason the cloud is so convenient is that it relies on a pay-per-use structure. Because wireless companies are already operating on this structure, they are farther ahead with being able to adequately serve cloud customers. Wireless companies can now offer web-based applications and virtual storage in addition to security and backup plans, which only strengthen their ability to compete with traditional internet companies and boost their portfolios.

With so many people getting on the bandwagon for new internet types like 4G wireless and fiber optic, it may seem like DSL has gone the way of the dinosaur. But the reality is that DSL is more popular than ever. It’s one of the more affordable ways to enjoy an internet connection in your home. For example, Qwest DSL offers 4 types of DSL internet packages which range in speed from 1.5 Mbps to 40 Mbps. Starting at under $15 per month, this can be an ideal connection for students needing to be able to get online to complete research or chat with friends. Even the lowest speed of 1.5 Mbps is adequate for downloading and using social media, and customers can choose from two kinds of adapters to surf anywhere within a residence wirelessly.

There are a lot of ISPs who offer a number of bells and whistles to increase customer convenience when watching television or using the internet. But among the technology offerings in the ISP arena, one that many technophobes appreciate is the internet and television service from att uverse. In addition to offering a fiber-optic internet connection that transfers data at the speed of light, customers can also opt for something called the Total Home DVR, which requires just one receiver to power several televisions in a home. Users can apause, record, schedule and delete programs simultaneously from more than one TV. They can also play one recorded show on different TVs at the same time and control them separately on different TVs at the same time.

If you’re looking for a reliable internet connection that offers enough speed for moderate internet use, then DSL with a company like Quest Internet might be right for you. The way in which DSL connects you to the internet is somewhat ingenious. Composed of two copper wires, phone lines transmit an analog signal which is what allows you to have phone conversations. Because computers could only read digital signals and phone lines only transmitted in analog, there was a difficulty in figuring out how to provide internet in this way. But then it became clear that it wasn’t the data that needed to be changed; it was simply knowing how to use a phone line to transmit digital information, which was soon discovered. A simple split of the signal in a phone line was all that was needed to allow for data as well as voice.

A Ph.D. student from the University of Cambridge is working to bring internet access to millions of Pakistanis. Umar Saif, who was recently recognized by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as one of the top young technology innovators in the world, devised a computer program called SMS-All that allowed people to send a text message to thousands of people at one time via a basic cell phone. Once registered, users can communicate in roughly the same way as they do via social networking sites in the western world. In a country where technological progress faces many hurdles and there are no ISPs like the high speed internet providers in my area, Saif’s invention is a monumental feat. And the proof is in the usage: since its release, SMS-All has seen 2.5 million users and almost four billion text
messages being sent.

The recent release by NASA of a 3-minute video of Hurricane Katrina is certainly riveting. Using cutting-edge technology, one is able to not only see the path of the devastating 2005 storm, but can also look inside it to see how its thunderstorm clouds grew to incredible heights and how much rain fell in each part of the storm on its journey to landfall. With the recent release of this video, some have questioned whether satellite internet service providers were operational during the storm, specifically, satellite phones. While there were several complaints of satellite phones not working properly, it was discovered that nearly all complaints were due to improper satellite phone usage. Some errors included not being clear of tall buildings, not ensuring an 80% view of the sky, and failing to wait until the phone had finished communicating with overhead satellites before trying to use it.

When I needed to get connected with another internet company, there was no way I could possibly compare prices for all of the internet service providers in my area. That would have been a full-time job! But I knew there had to be a way to figure it out. I knew they would probably have web sites, and so I did a quick internet search for a few ISPs I was interested in. And sure enough, their sites popped right up. And boy, did I get an education! I could review all kinds of stuff at the company sites, but what was really cool was that I could check for availability just by entering in my zip code. In just seconds, I knew who could connect me and who couldn’t.
