You may have heard about the National Broadband Stimulus, a program designed to bring the internet to every community in the United States. This initiative requires the building of infrastructure, the improvement of public computer centers and the development of ideas that would see further broadband adoption. But according to a Fierce Telecom report, the initiative still has a long way to go, even though over three billion dollars in grant money has been received. The status of the initiative is difficult to gauge, considering that the maps indicating progress haven’t been updated since 2010. However, there are other indicators such as Broadband Forum reports which show a sharp growth in the build out of fiber-to-the-home networks. In addition to increased build outs are the increasing demand by businesses and consumers for faster and more reliable internet.

Thanks to wireless technology from internet service providers in Dallas, a patient’s medical information can be transmitted and accessed via smartphone with the LifeNet service. Most recently, a patient experiencing a heart attack was able to have their EKG sent to Baylor Garland Hospital in under one minute, and while paramedics were still at her home. The wireless transmission of the patient’s medical information resulted in doctors being prepared in the emergency room well before the patient arrived. This type of service is revolutionizing hospitals across the country. In addition to allowing for wireless transmission of information, a patient’s condition can also be monitored in real time by waiting doctors as the patient is en route in an ambulance. For the staff at Baylor Garland Hospital, having the LifeNet technology means that work can begin on a patient far sooner than it used to. With time being a critical factor, especially in emergency room cases, this makes the cost of the service, about $3,000, negligible.

Students today are enjoying an enriched experience in the classroom, thanks to internet providers in my area. Internet technology is flipping the roles of teacher and student by allowing for group discussion and more involvement in the learning process. Active learning using devices like iPads and laptops in the classroom keeps students engaged in what they’re learning, and helps them to retain more of what they learn. Schools everywhere are learning about students in other countries using video chat and virtual field trips to education centers in remote areas of the world. Although learning in this way is becoming more popular all the time, some argue that the costs to equip classrooms with mobile devices and internet are expensive. But those same students will be accessing similar technology when the time comes to enter the working world.

Recent hacks to Google Wallet have resulted in a patch of its security flaw and the re-enabling of prepaid card use. The flaw allowed prepaid cards to be transferable, which would have only required resetting the user PIN and using a prepaid card to get access to a user’s funds. Thankfully, there didn’t seem to be any incidents of theft or abuse of the cards or PINS. While the first hack would have taken time and skill to be successful, the second was able to be easily executed by any skill level. Google chose to disable access to prepaid cards before it created the patch for the flaw, which eliminated the possibility of future hacking attempts. Although mobile payments are predicted by many to be the main way consumers pay for their future purposes, this incident has shown that there are still some bugs to be worked out.

There’s a lot going on in today’s wireless internet service market. But do you know the difference between mobile and home wireless? There’s an easy way to understand. Mobile wireless offers internet connectivity outside of the home on devices like your smart phone or tablet. If these devices are enabled for the internet, you can check your email or surf while you’re on the go. Home wireless is simply the ability to use your computer or device within the home and without the need for running cables into every room. If you’re looking to be a mobile wireless customer, coverage will be key. 4G coverage is currently the fastest and most reliable connection available, but advances are occurring with many providers which will make this convenient option even faster than it is now.

Are you up on the latest happenings with your local internet providers? Not staying current with new developments could actually put you at a disadvantage. When ISPs introduce new technology, or change their prices or billing structures, this could signal that the time is right to review your current plan. Just because a provider has offered a faster option for service, doesn’t necessarily mean that a move to that new plan will benefit your budget. It’s always a good idea to review your family’s usage from time to time so that you can ensure that the internet plan you currently have is adequately meeting your needs. If you’ve decided to compare ISPs to see if you can get better service elsewhere, you can use your connection to find a quality site that will show you the prices and speeds of all of the major companies in your area.

Changing your internet provider can be a daunting task, especially if you live in an area where there are many choices for ISPs. But there is a way to save time and money while you compare. Being able to go online to assess companies like Qwest internet can mean that you find the best provider for you much more quickly than you were expecting. Going online means you don’t have to talk to pushy salespeople; you can take your time and review all of your options so that you know exactly which providers can offer you the most value at the best possible price. And if what you find on the provider web sites isn’t enough information, you can always get multiple points of view by looking up reviews of companies.

You may have seen offerings to get internet at a discount from major companies like Quest internet. But before you sign up for service, you might want to do a little comparison shopping first, as there could be other companies who can serve your needs at a better price. If you own a business, you may actually be able to wheel and deal for the best connection at low cost. The only way to really assess the quality of advertised deals is to compare them side by side, which a number of web sites allow you to do. You can also get a deeper look into what companies offer by reading information on what their customers think of them. As well, a good tip is to look for information on how far ahead a company’s technicians are booked; if there seems to be a long wait time to get connected, it could signal trouble.

If you want internet that’s fast enough for what you need but won’t cost you a bundle, you might be considering a company like Qwest DSL. DSL service is popular due to its convenience; your connection is initiated in your existing phone line. But both data and voice can be used at the same time, because your line is split to allow for two different signals. There may be many companies who offer this kind of connection in your area. But instead of wondering about them, you could be researching them online beginning with a quick search. You may choose to visit the ISP’s web site to check prices, or opt for a comparison site that lists all of the companies near you so that you can compare them side by side.

You may have heard the term ‘spectrum’ when reading the news about wireless internet service providers in my area. The term defines wireless data bandwidth. A company’s amount of spectrum determines how much data usage they can offer to their customers. And a few major companies have attempted to purchase spectrum from other sources in order to meet a rapidly growing demand for mobile wireless internet. But some see this as a short-term solution to a long-term problem. Because while some companies are buying spectrum in large chunks, that spectrum will eventually run out. So in order to ration as much as possible, companies place caps on the amount of data their customers can use. And because spectrum is expensive, this could mean that only the larger wireless companies will be able to offer data to their customers without having to compete with other companies. And some think that this lack of competition will not only cause prices to rise, but slow innovation in the wireless sector.

In an effort to improve the coverage and performance of its wireless network, ATT Uverse spent over $1 billion to upgrade its networks over a three-year period. The company sees the investment as a key factor is driving economic growth, as it will stimulate jobs and give Wisconsin businesses the technology they need to meet their current and future demands. The company has also increased the speed of its mobile broadband offering by upgrading 175 cell sites with 350 additional layers of frequency, and activating 15 new cell sites to improve its network coverage in the area. As well, it plans to upgrade its nationwide cell sites, which number in the thousands, to improve mobile voice and broadband services with the goal of doubling 4G LTE coverage in 2012.

Believe it or not, DSL is one of the most popular choices for getting online in the U.S. This may be because a connection with companies like Qwest DSL is not only convenient, but affordable as well as reliable. This always-on connection allows for an instantaneous response whenever you visit a web page, use social media or want to video chat with a loved one who’s far away. As well, because DSL brings the internet through your phone line, you don’t need to run any cables or wait for anything to be installed. Many companies now have a self-install option which usually includes a CD that can take you through the steps needed to get online quickly and easily. And a DSL subscription often costs a lot less than other land line connections such as cable and fiber optic.

March of 2011 marked the month that ATT Uverse would be imposing caps on both its 250GB fiber and 150GB DSL services. The charges would cost in the amount of $10 for every 50GB exceeded. While some users with DSL connections are being charged for overages, it appears that many customers still aren’t. Of course, this hasn’t resulted in many complaints. Others are of the opinion that AT&T’s meters used for monitoring overage are nowhere near accurate when compared with usage recorded on home routers. But this company isn’t the only one who is still working its the back end billing system bugs; a major Canadian ISP has also experienced monitoring issues, with some users reporting an up to 700mb discrepancy between the company’s official monitor and their router logs.

If you’ve been in doubt about the reliability and affordability of satellite internet service, it may be time to revisit this connection. Satellite internet is becoming more popular among surfers today than ever before. A number of satellites launched recently will not only result in faster connections for those on satellite, but will also increase the number of areas that can receive internet service. In addition, the growing number of internet users who choose satellite will ultimately reduce the costs for this service for anyone who connects in the future. And although satellite does require an upfront cost for equipment, there are federal programs in place to assist with this cost for those who qualify. And satellite service can compete with today’s land-line connections at a cost than can be a lot easier on your wallet.

The news is out: SOPA and PIPA will not affect the policies of internet service providers in my area, at least for the time being. Officials decided to stop the legislation on Friday, after much outcry from internet users and those running sites like Wikipedia, who blacked out their pages in protest over the legislation. Although the bills were aimed at curbing copyright infringement, those against them say that blocking customer access to sites of this type is infringing on the rights of users and could result in numerous lawsuits from both individual users and businesses. The bills were stopped following the withdrawal of support from several sponsors and the inability of the legislation to obtain the 60 votes needed to make it to the next step in the process.

AP reports that the EU’s Commissioner for the Digital Agenda has joined the growing cry for closer inspection of the SOPA bill, tweeting that bad legislation isn’t needed when we should be safeguarding the benefits of an open internet. In most cases, the EU refrains from open criticism of pending U.S. legislation, making these recent comments about the bills an alert to the seriousness of the issue. The bill, which would allow legitimate sites to be targeted due to the sharing of pirated content, was protested by several sites on Wednesday, who ‘blacked out’ by making their content unavailable from 12 to 24 hours. In place of their regular main pages, some sites posted contact information for government representatives, which resulted in a flood of calls to law and policy maker offices. The EU has long aimed to tackle the problem of online piracy without infringing on internet freedoms.

In order to accelerate the development of a global 4G standard, Clear wireless internet and China Mobile have signed an agreement that outlines test specifications and joint interoperability testing for TD-LTE devices. The testing will enable both entities to increase the speed of TD-LTE development for devices with multiple bands and modes. Labs will be created this month in the United States and China which will use common equipment and testing methodology so that commercial TD-LTE devices can be evaluated and qualified in both countries simultaneously. In the U.S., testing will occur in Phoenix, AZ and Herndon, VA. Beijing and other trial cities will be the site of testing in China. The partnership benefits both parties, as China Mobile can take advantage of Clearwire’s expertise with large markets. And Clearwire can benefit from China Mobile’s leadership in global wireless technology.

Even if you’re a Verizon customer, you may not be aware that there have been a few Verizon FiOS promotions recently. The end of 2011 marked the announcement by the company that it would be developing a global organization which would oversee all business and government services with a wide range of business-class applications. The organization will be called Verizon Enterprise Solutions. A Mjaor communications company also announced at the end of the year that it would be selling its spectrum licenses to Verizon, putting the company in a position to offer mobile services to customers with growing demands. And at this year’s CES, the company launched a series of 4G LTE devices, Droids and a new Blackberry Curve, each of which offer something for everyone from business consumers to those who enjoy using a number of apps for personal use.

The news is now official: former Quest DSL company CenturyLink will be expanding its FTTN network to cover territory previously covered by Qwest. The Fierce Telecom report also details other plans which were revealed by R. Stewart Ewing, Jr., CenturyLink CEO, such as the planned maintenance of its video service strategy which will leverage both IPTV and satellite. The company’s fiber network is currently at the 210,000 mile mark, thanks to its recent acquisitions of Qwest, and it uses this network to centralize its provision of the wide range of products it offers, including IPTV, to customers. And while the actual number of IPTV customers is relatively small, Ewing says the service is working well in areas where it is available. IPTV from Qwest is currently available to over 1 million households.

Those who have loved ones stationed in the military overseas can receive special holiday greetings that they can watch as often as they wish. Troop Greetings On Demand is the latest of Comcast specials, and has been delivering these holiday messages since 2003. Powered by Xfinity On Demand technology, the feature requires some work in order to be put together. Video tapes from the Army/Air Force Hometown News Service number in the hundreds, and are received by the company, who then edit them into short video greetings for recipients. The service has already begun, with 42 Michigan families being notified that they have messages waiting. Comcast customers wishing to view the videos can do so from now through the end of January 2012 by accessing the “Get Local” section of the Xfinity On Demand menu.

DSL providers in the U.K., along with other internet service companies have decided that they will no longer leave the blocking of controversial web sites up to their customers, thanks to family advocate Reg Bailey who is at the core of this recent decision. Internet companies will ask their customers which sites they wish to access prior to signing up for service, a move that some say only advocates censorship online. But the internet companies stance is that the move will force families to genuinely consider what sites their children may be visiting. The issue lies in the parental blocks available to families via ISPs. While effective as a means of protection, the blocks only work if they are turned on by the parents themselves, which is allegedly not occurring.

North Americans certainly relish their internet connections. But in China, where the largest online population in the world resides, it was recently reported by the Xinhua news agency that internet connections have topped 500 million, 15 million of which joined in the last 6 months alone. Some say this increase is due to the realization that the internet offers a forum where concerns and opinions about the social and political state of affairs can be shared. But Beijing officials worry that the internet could be used to plan and execute any manner of social unrest, and have increased their surveillance of the internet in recent years, even blocking content which is deemed to be politically sensitive. But microblogs which work much in the same way like our Twitter have served to provide a different forum for expression.

Wireless internet service in Illinois is now faster than ever before. A new cell site was activated at Northern Illinois University recently which will not only greatly improve the coverage of the university’s psychology, computer and engineering buildings, but also beyond to include nearby residential areas. The new site also includes a backup generator in the event of an emergency situation. Customers everywhere are relying on their mobile devices to communicate with one another these days, with that number on a steady rise. Better mobile coverage means that Illinois customers will be able to use all wireless features including internet access, emailing of pictures and videos, and downloading media in the form of games and ringtones. Many of today’s internet providers are upgrading and strengthening their networks to meet the growing demand for wireless access.

If you’re a customer with the former Qwest DSL, prepare yourself for limits on your internet service. The CenturyLink web site now contains a new addition to its EUP (Excessive Use Policy) that states there will be a 150 GB cap on 1.5 Mbps connections or slower, and a 250GB cap on 1.5Mbps connections or faster. But as yet, there don’t seem to be any plans for those who consistently go over the caps. Although repeat offenders may be disconnected from service. According to the site, subscribers who violate the cap will be contacted via e-mail or web message via their browser and then it will be suggested they upgrade to a faster package. But the company only plans to take into consideration the total bytes being transferred over the offending subscriber’s connection.
