DSL Providers and Their Plans

Monday, December 21st, 2009

When you are choosing among DSL providers, there are several things to keep in mind.  One major consideration is if a company provides service in your area.  The second is reliability, and the third is cost and the variety of plans available.  You’ll want to be certain that the company offers reliable service, and has a plan that fits your needs and your budget.  Typically your internet service provider will set you up with a DSL modem and appropriate phone jacks, in exchange for a commitment to a contract of a year or more.

Some high speed internet providers will offer a cable internet service, others will offer DSL.  You might decide to choose among DSL providers who bundle their services with phone and satellite television, offering you a discount on the whole package.  You’ll also find that the faster speeds cost a small amount more every month and are well worth it.  The days of waiting for a slow connection to download important information are over!

DSL technology is advancing at an extremely rapid rate. More importantly, DSL providers are also adopting new technology, like fiber optics, that will change the playing field in the competitive high speed internet market. Both At&t’s new Uverse and Verizon’s FiOS have left cable providers scratching their head wondering when this evolution happened. DSL service providers went from offering 5-7 Mbps speeds to 30 Mbps litterally overnight. The have invested large amounts of money in infrastructure which made it all possible. These advancements in technology don’t just cover internet access, the new fiber optic lines also carry TV and phone signals with unmatched clarity.

So how do you choose? The best place to start is by understanding your personal internet access needs. choose a speed that makes sense for how you plan on using the internet. Supersonic speed is not for everyone. Luckily for consumers, both At&t and Verizon offer several plans under the normal DSL speed. Many of the plans offer cash back incentives, free wireless modems, reduced pricing and other special online only offers. So the best thing you can do is compare them side by side at the plan level. You can also read DSL service provider reviews to get more familiar with what each ISP is offering.

If you cannot resist the need for high speed, fiber optic internet is the way to go. There should be a new term to describe these providers since DSL is no longer the dominating technology. Nonetheless, we will be reviewing and featuring DSL providers from time to time on one of our article pages. We are entering a new era of broadband technology so we’ve decided to give it the attention it deserves, in hopes that the information will assist consumers in making better decision.

DSL Providers Make Sense for Home Based Businesses

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Today’s home-based entrepreneur usually operates many types of devices from home including a telephone, FAX, and computer with Internet access. There are several options available for connecting to the internet, including satellite and cable, but the most affordable service belongs to the DSL providers. Depending upon your need for speed, the cost can range from twenty to forty dollars a month. The plans with the lowest price allow you to transfer data between five and fourteen times faster than an ordinary dialup connection. The higher price plans usually allow you to operate at speeds up to one hundred twenty-five times faster than dialup services. A small business with low reliance on the net, can usually get away with only subscribing to the “light” plans since they tend to mostly use the internet for email and general browsing type activities.

It is a good idea to compare the cost of different high speed DSL providers before ordering your service. You can find many good resources on the net to help compare fees between the ISP’s. Services can usually be ordered online, saving you time waiting on hold. Prices vary for installation, set up fees and monthly services. If you live in an older home you may be better served by calling the companies directly though. The increase in the number of home-based over the past twenty years has led to increased demand on the telecommunication systems. Older homes built before the onset of the home computer and Internet are especially limiting for the person who wants to work at home. Most homes in this category have only one telephone line coming into the house and it is usually in the kitchen or living room area. Unless the home-based entrepreneur wants to sit at the kitchen table or in front of the TV to do business, it usually means a second line must be added to the house if a separate telephone number is needed for the business, although if this is not necessary, the DSL provider can accommodate a telephone and computer on one line.

DSL Providers: Easy to Set-up

Many times DSL providers will ship your modem to you to save even more money. Don’t worry if you are not tech savvy, setting up DSL in your home is very easy and in minutes you will be browsing the web at incredible speeds. DSL providers supply the instructions and you do the work. Basically, you take a regular phone line and put it in the wall jack, run the phone line to the modem and slip it into the right connection. After that you take your fire wire (this looks like a phone line but thicker) and plug it into your modem then plug it into your computer. Sounds easy because it is easy.
